We’re all mad here.

In your mind, out sight title sequence.

This project was done as part of my studies at Billy Blue in 2020.

The brief was to create and brand a movie concept and apply this in a title sequence. A key element of the project was creating an atmosphere. The overall look and feel should reflect not only the concept, but themes explored: Madness, the human nature and betrayal. In your mind, out of sight is a movie based on a book, The Psychopath test, by Jon Ronson. Where the book looks at mental illnesses in more depth, the movie is to follows the story of a guy named Tony, whilst exploring the questions of sanity.

Synopsis.

“After beating him up, I needed an escape plan to avoid going to prison. Just act crazy she said, you’ll get in some place else. Warm and fuzzy, you’ll be out in no time. Yeah. In no fucking time.”

By imitating famous psychopaths like Ted Bundy and fictional characters such as Norman Bates, Tony manages to convince everyone he is insane, all to escape going to prison. Following his arrest, Tony is committed to a mental institute. His ticket out is acting sane, but how do you convince someone of your sanity after making sure they think you are mad?

“Very charming. Alarmingly so. And highly manipulative”. Tony’s efforts to get out go south and instead, he is declared a psychopath. Now, 10 years later, Tony is still trying to convince his sanity to anyone willing to listen. But isn’t that exactly what a psychopaths would do? How do you act sane? And how does being observed affect the way we act?

Title sequence.

The title sequence is an animated, more of an abstract piece that uses easy to recognise, objects to create metaphors. It dives into the mind of the of the psychopath - literally, through a key hole triggered by movement. A white rabbit is an Alice in Wonderland reference and symbolises the start of a journey. The concept is reflected through metaphors on themes such as the predator and the prey, the “crazy eyes” as well as colour choices. The rock music chosen creates contrast and an uneasy atmosphere.
